The Ghan

A journey on The Ghan is an incomparable way to travel the two jewels of Australia’s Northern Territory – the Red Centre and the tropical Top End. The timetable makes the most of the daylight hours to offer unsurpassed views of the passing landscape.

Peak Season

A new extended service of The Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide has been introduced for the 2015 peak travel seasons, taking quests through the heart of the Australian Outback on a 76-hour adventure. Enjoy Off Train Excursions at Katherine, more time in Alice Springs including a spectacular dinner under the stars at the MacDonnell Ranges and a full day to explore the underground wonders of Coober Pedy.

For the first time, guests have the option to upgrade their journey to include a fly-in visit of Uluru, getting back in time to rejoin The Ghan for the full rail experience. The extended Ghan will operate between 23 May and 22 August 2015 for Darwin-Adelaide journey's only.

Three day, two night Ghan, Darwin - Alice Springs - Adelaide

Great Southern Rail introduces the Outback short stop aboard The Ghan - a unique opportunity for guests to set foot in some of the most isolated and magical parts of Australia to witness an unforgettable Outback sunrise or sunset. On journeys heading north to Darwin, guests can dsembark to watch the morning sun climb over the horizon in the remote reaches of  Northern South Australia.

On journeys heading south to Adelaide, guests can cast their eyes skyward for a glittering showcase of stars as they enjoy an Outback evening in Manguri.

The Indian Pacific

The Indian Pacific offers travellers four days and three nights of one of the most impressive and indulgent ways to explore the vastness of Australia. 

From the Indian Ocean on Australia's western shores to the Pacific on the east, the two oceans that give the train its name, you will watch the passing backdrop of Australia's magnificent landscapes. Travel in either direction - from the 'harbour city' of Sydney in the east or the lovely Western Australian capital Perth.

New to the Indian Pacific is a remote "short stop" where guests can disembark from the train to enjoy a glowing Nullarbor sunset at Rawlinna.

Red Service Day/Nighter Seat offers a comfortable recliner lounge chair perfect for the budget conscious.

Gold Service offers an elegant sleeper cabin featuring a private en-suite and complimentary toiletries. All meals and beverages are included and are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant.

Platinum Service is the premium level of train travel and is like no other Australian train accommodation. Cabins are approximately twice the size of a Gold twin Cabin and include double bedding. All meals and beverages are included and are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant.

The Overland:

There's no better way to enjoy the trip between Melbourne and Adelaide than on the Overland. The Overland runs a daylight service between Adelaide and Melbourne in both directions, twice a week and provides a comfortable, relaxing journey between the cities and a great way to ease into a holiday in either Melbourne, Adelaide or surrounding regions.

With Motorrail service onboard The Overland, Great Southern Rail provides you with the opportunity to travel in comfort on all of our great trains, then enjoy the convienience of your own vehicle at the end of the line, ready to discover new and exciting places.

Throughout this interstate journey, guests can soak up a diverse range of landscapes from rugged mallee scrubland, to fields of golden crops, over vast open plains through gently rolling hills.

New Zealand Rail

Part of being on holiday is knowing you can do what you want, whenever you want. So the Scenic Rail Pass is perfect. It allows you to hop on and off any of our train services, at any station, as many times as you like for the duration of your pass. Rail passes offer excellent value for money and the more you travel, the better value they become.

Tranz Alpine – Christchurch to Greymouth, or reverse This is truly one of the world’s great scenic trips, crossing the width of the South Island. All carriages provide full panoramic windows and an open-air viewing carriage so you don’t miss a second of the stunning scenery. The Tranz Alpine departs Christchurch and Grey mouth daily and takes 4.5 hours in either direction.

Coastal Pacific – Picton to Christchurch, or reverse This journey is a scenic feast of New Zealand, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side and rugged Pacific coastline on the other. The Coastal Pacific includes an open air viewing carriage and departs October through April.

Northern Explorer – Auckland to Wellington, or reverse Take a journey through the heart of the North Island, travelling between Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and Wellington, the arts and culture capital. The Northern Explorer departs Auckland on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and departs Wellington on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Travel Options

There are three options for seating on China Railway services:

Seats are suitable for short rail journeys. Soft sleepers are comfortable four-berth compartments with full bedding provided. Deluxe sleepers are available on some major train routes and consist of a comfortable two-berth compartment with private ensuite.

Japan Rail

Ultra-modern, slick, fast and reliable... step into the future and experience Japan by rail. Travel through awe-inspiring landscapes, to thriving modern metropolises or traditional rural villages. Discover hot springs, volcanoes or cool mountain regions. Japan Rail passes are the most economical way to see this beautiful and diverse country and are only available for purchase outside of Japan. Japan Rail Pass

The most popular accompaniment to any holiday to Japan, the Japan Rail Pass gives you unlimited travel over the entire Japan Network as well as limited bus and ferry services (excludes Nozomi super-express shinkansen bullet trains). Purchase a pass for 7, 14 or 21 days of unlimited travel.

If you're intending to focus your holiday on a specific region of Japan, choose one of the following regional train passes.

Japan Rail East Pass

The Japan Rail East covers metropolitan Tokyo and many popular destinations in Eastern Japan including: Nagano, Niigata, Sendai, Morioka, Misawa and Akita.

Japan Rail West Pass

Kansai Area Pass covers Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara and Hakata.

Sanyo Area Pass covers Osaka, Hiroshima, Okayama and Hakata.

Conditions: To be eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass you must meet the following criteria:

  • Entering Japan as a temporary visitor/tourist from abroad for sightseeing under the entry status ‘Temporary Visitor.’
  • Japanese national living in a foreign country who is qualified to live permanently in that country.
  • Married to a Japanese resident who is residing in a country other than Japan.


Vietnamese trains are the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. The trains are safe, comfortable and inexpensive. Your train journey will be an experience in itself and become an integral part of your visit to Vietnam. Air-conditioned trains link Hanoi, Hué, Danang, Nha Trang and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Hoi An has no station, but it's just 30 kilometres by bus or taxi from Danang.

Travel options

There are a myriad of point to point fares to take you to almost any destination throughout Vietnam. Soft class sleepers are the recommended way to travel. The four berth compartments are air-conditioned and are perfect for any journey involving overnight travel.
