Magnetic Island

Sunny and Relaxed

A short boat ride away from Townsville, Magnetic Island, or 'Maggie' as it is known locally, is a beautiful example of Australian nature, with giant granite boulders, hoop pines and swathes of eucalypts. Two-thirds of the island is national park, home to more than 2500 free-roaming koalas.

Winter is the best time to visit Magnetic Island, as the temperature usually stays at around 27 degrees and is still warm enough to go swimming. Stay away from the stingers which normally come to visit in the Summer months.

Insiders' Tips

  1. Visit Reef HQ Aquarium: The world's largest living coral aquarium and national reef education centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
  2. Bushwalk on Magnetic Island: The island boasts 25 kilometres of walking trails through tropical bush, ranging from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.
