Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Quaint Villages, Spectacular Vistas

Hire a car and take a detour away from the coastline and discover the lush interior of the Sunshine Coast. The beautiful hinterland region is a rich subtropical landscape of rolling hills, offering a cool respite from the coast at an elevation of around 450 metres. The hinterland’s Blackall Range is a fantastic driving destination, and home to a collection of charming historical villages, such as Montville and Maleny.

Originally settled in 1887, Montville is considered the Sunshine Coast’s creative heart, with an impressive range of quality art galleries and locally made crafts, gifts and fashion. Accommodation here ranges from rustic rainforest cottages to luxury hotels. Not to be missed are the walks and waterfalls of Kondalilla National Park, Kondalilla being the Aboriginal word for ‘rushing waters’.

Maleny is especially renowned for its environment and scenic spots, sitting in quintessential dairy country peppered with rainforests. Art and craft galleries can be found all around the township, and eateries along Maple Street offer up menus of fresh, local, organic produce. Nearby, explore walking trails through verdant rainforest in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

An active highlight of the hinterland is the eco-friendly Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, which winds its way through some of the region’s most scenic landscapes.
