Agent Tools & Info - Asia - Sri Lanka - Colombo

Sri Lanka's capital city and also it's largest, is a busy and vibrant city. Previously known as the "Garden City of the East", has had it's challenges since post colonisation, it has taken on new life since the end of the decades long civil war in 2009. Offering a great mixture of the old stately colonial buildings, many of which are being renovated to their previous glory and new high rise luxury hotels, shopping malls and harbour port, making this a new cosmopolitan city.

The two old neighborhoods (Fort and Pettah) are packed with history and beautiful colonial buildings and markets making it a great place to wander around making discoveries. Once you have discovered these areas take a tuk-tuk to the rest of the sights of Colombo, finding great local food, characterful shops and tiny, convivial cafes and finish your day at Galle Face Green watching the sunset with local families promenading by the sea, playing cricket and flying kites.

Fort Area - The downtown area of Colombo is the commercial hub, home to the stock exchange & World Trade Centre, the countries tallest building. This is a rather compact and small, home to stunning old colonial-era architecture masterpieces that have been restored with a mix of modern structures, the Old Dutch Hospital is a good example of this and well worth a visit.

Galle Face Green - South of the Fort Area to the Galle Face Hotel, is a long stretch of green lawn next to the narrow beach and sea promenade, there are also a lot of food vendors, selling great street food at a cheap price. Come after four o’clock to see kids running kites and watch the sun set into the ocean.

Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque - Also known as "The Red Mosque" its tall minarets are seen from almost every street, towering over the hustle and bustle of Pettah market, taking up almost a whole block, is best viewed from the Main Street or the Second Cross Street. The domes are built in the shape of pomegranate (unlike the traditional onion shape) With it's candy-striped red-and-white brickwork, the colorful patterns are meant to convey the same image.

Viharamahadevi Park - A large green expanse, boasting 1000 trees of 89 varieties, notable for it's beautiful blooms from March - May. The park has several water fountains, walking & cycling paths and a kids playground, close to major landmarks, the National Museum, the new Town Hall and the Dewatagaha Mosque. Great for an early morning walk or a romantic afternoon stroll as the sun goes down.

National Museum of Colombo - Established in 1877, the National Museum is the largest in all of Sri Lanka. The museum displays the artefects of Sri Lanka's, pre historic, ancient and colonial heritage. The most impressive of these are the royal throne of King Wimaladharmasuriya II (the last King of Kandy) and crown jewels returned to Sri LAnka by the British Government
