Rail Overview

Enjoy the freedom of rail travel

With the ultimate in comfort, safety and convenience, train travel is now experiencing a strong resurgence in popularity. And there are some very good reasons why. Taking to the tracks has a lot of advantages...

Firstly, trains allow you to travel in safety and comfort. Restaurant cars, food trolley service, bar cars on day trains and sleeping accommodation on night trains mean that no matter how long or short your trip, you will travel in comfort and convenience from city centre to city centre, without traffic hassles or airport delays. As an extra bonus, old-worldly charm sets train travel apart from more mundane forms of transport.

Scenic and luxury trains offer full catering and service, and the likes of the Rocky Mountaineer, the legendary Orient-Express, The Ghan, the Indian Pacific and many Swiss scenic trains will take you on some memorable journeys through some of the world's most spectacular landscapes in unparalleled luxury. Most large cities in the world are serviced by at least one railway line, along with numerous local and commuter services, so you can usually be assured of frequent services. Trains are also rarely affected by weather delays.

You have a lot of freedom on a train: chat with your travel companions, meet new people, read a book or just sit back and take in the incredible scenery rolling past. Train travel can be an excellent choice for families: children are generally fascinated by trains and it's much easier to care for children on a train than in a car for example. Very importantly, train travel is recognised as an environmentally friendly travel option.

When purchasing tickets, many countries such as Europe, Japan, Canada and the USA offer a great range of rail passes for travellers who need flexible travel options, whether for business or pleasure. The other option is a point-to-point ticket - generally more suitable for shorter trips and often representing excellent value for money. Many rail tickets and passes offer significant discounts for seniors and students or persons under 26 years, making your dollar go even further.

There is a timelessness to Vietnam and yet this is a country whose time in now. Vietnam's fresh sense of optimism in the wake of a more relaxed regime and new freedoms, has given it the perfect launch pad to show off its world-beating natural assets: from the charm of the Mekong Delta to its stunning central coastline, the soaring mountains of Sapa in the north, awe-inspiring Halong bay, emerald-green rice paddies and traditional cruising to tantalise the tastebuds.

Vietnamese trains are the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. The trains are safe, comfortable and inexpensive. Your train journey will be an experience in itself and become an integral part of your visit to Vietnam.

Air-conditioned trains link Hanoi, Hué, Danang, Nha Trang and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Hoi An has no station, but it's just 30 kilometres by bus or taxi from Danang. There are also trains from Hanoi to Haiphong (for Halong Bay) and Hanoi to Lao Cai (for Sapa).

You'll see some wonderful scenery from the train between Hanoi and Saigon. This is the most scenic section of the line, running along the coast past bays and islands and through the hills. The train travels at low speed up fierce gradients, with an assisting locomotive at the rear and people sitting on the roof! Reunification Express Trains between Hanoi and Saigon are sometimes referred to as the 'Reunification Express' by guide books or tourist agencies. However, there are now many trains on this route and no single train officially carries this name.
