Bavaria is perhaps the most evocative of German regions, flanked by the Alps to the south, the Black Forest to the west, studded throughout with castles, quaint villages and some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe, and sitting at its heart, one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.
It's not surprising that Munich is considered one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Germany. The city boasts a collection of beautiful Baroque architecture, a lush central park (the Englischer Garten), two of the best universities in Germany, a booming modern economy with global headquarters of many world-class companies, and the greatest beer culture on the planet.
A pilgrimage of sorts for many, Munich's famous Oktoberfest is an annual extravaganza of beer, bratwurst and music. The festival actually begins in September, ending on the first Sunday in October. It is estimated that over 120,000 bratwurst and half a million chickens are eaten, washed down with over seven million litres of beer, with each of Germany's breweries represented in cavernous beer tents.
